By and large, your body is pretty good at protecting and healing itself. We are all supported by numerous biological systems that are designed to close off wounds, eliminate infecting pathogens, anesthetize pain, regrow and rebuild damaged muscle and bone—you get the idea. Modern medicine is usually called in only when pain becomes severe or your body isn’t able to fix a problem within a reasonable timeframe. (Hold that thought, though … we’ll return to it in a bit.)
Of course, there are ways to improve your body’s natural healing and repair mechanisms. Keeping these systems in top shape can help you recover more quickly from illness and injury, reduce stress and fatigue, and in some cases even contain or prevent a problem before it reaches a more serious stage. You’ll probably recognize these as pretty standard fitness and health tips:
- Eat a nutritious and balanced diet with plenty of vital protein, healthy fats, etc.
- Drink a healthy amount water.
- Exercise regularly.
- Find ways to relax and de-stress, whether that’s through massage, yoga, cooking, watching a cheesy movie on Netflix—whatever works best for you. Tons of scientific studies show that a peaceful mind can aid healing, while emotional stress can reduce it (or even cause illness).
Okay, remember that thought you were holding? Time to jump back.
A lot of modern medicine actually has fairly little to do with healing. Many treatments are more concerned with reducing symptoms than with treating the underlying cause. In other instances, medical treatments are there mostly to protect a damaged area long enough to allow the body’s natural healing to take place—a cast or brace, for example.
But there are some medical treatments that actually do help boost your body’s natural healing, too. One great example is extracorporeal pulse activation treatment (EPAT), which is available at our office. EPAT works by stimulating your own biological anti-inflammatory and repair mechanisms with pulses of energy. Theses pulses are delivered to the skin via an applicator and penetrate deep into damaged tissues to trigger a healing response. EPAT is extremely useful in the treatment of all kinds of chronic pain, sports injuries, and inflammatory conditions—just to name a few examples.
